Welcome to a Cartography of the Anthropocene

The Anthropocene may not exist as a prescribed epoch on the geologic time scale, but that should change by 2016, when the International Commission on Stratigraphy is expected to officially incorporate it into the geological lexicon.

Unofficially, however, the term continues to grow in popularity as a useful way of explaining humanity’s influence on the planet, as highlighted by the film “Welcome to the Anthropocene” opening this year’s UN’s Rio+20 Earth Summit in June. The following link provides a number of interesting maps of how humanity has structured itself on the planet:
