Gravity Powered Lamp Could Provide As Much Light As 40 Watt Bulb

Daniel Black has highlighted this article to me recently on a student-designed floor lamp powered by gravity. The former student at Virginia Tech, Clay Moulton, created the light-emitting diode (LED) lamp (named Gravia) back in 2007. It went on to win second place in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition as part of the Greener Gadgets Conference in New York City in 2008.

A 2008 article on the Moulton’s lamp in Science News can be accessed here.

Ben Lefebvre, energy reporter for Dow Jones and Wall Street Journal, also highlighted a very interesting article on the GravityLight, which has strong potential for lighting applications in developing countries.

This article, with a short video, can be accessed here.
