Green Party: end PSO levy to supports unsustainable turf cutting on Irish bogs

Ireland’s Green Party has today called for an end to the government subsidy to the peat industry, commonly known as the PSO levy that is applied as a percentage to all domestic electricity bills in the country. The party estimates approximately €70m is collected annually to support “inefficient, dirty and outdated turf power stations”. The PSO levy has also been a cornerstone of government policy towards supporting renewable energy development, especially wind, though the majority of the tax does go towards propping up the peat industry.
