Dark Ages Redux: American Politics and the End of the Enlightenment by John Atcheson

In a recent article on American politics and anthropogenic climate change John Atcheson argues that we are witnessing a new slide into the Dark Ages, where our socio-political world is determined by policy based on “fiat, not facts”, with magic and superstition often over-riding proven Enlightenment “systems based on skepticism and a relentless and methodical search for truth”.  Moreover:

“Now, we seek to operate by revealed truths, not reality. Decrees from on high – often issued by an unholy alliance of religious fundamentalists, self-interested corporations, and greedy fat cats – are offered up as reality by rightwing politicians.”
