Irish Times: “Councillors defy legal advice over zoning near bat cave”, business as usual for Ireland’s local authorities

It’s business as usual for Ireland’s local governments after a recent planning review of complaints of planning irregularities across seven local authorities was essentially “whitewashed” according to former Minister for Environment and Green Party member, John Gormley. Ireland’s local authorities continue to ignore legal advice, fail to correctly interpret aspects of existing planning laws and do not show proper transparency in their planning decisions.

A recent article in the Irish Times highlights Clare County Council’s decision to ignore legal advice and zone a site, designated as a special area of conservation by the NPWS, for housing development. Clearly we have learned nothing in this country!

The article on Clare County Council’s decision can be accessed here.

Carl O’Brien and Frank McDonald’s report on the Department of Environment’s findings can be accessed here.
