New Scientist: “Ignore shocking decline of farm birds at our peril”

The staggering decline (50% since 1980) of farmland bird species across Europe is shown in stark detail in the graph below. The “index of population of 36 specialist farmland birds for the last 30 years equates to an estimated loss of 297 million farmland birds in Europe during that period” (Gregory, 2012).

Broken down into individual species the image below (derived from a survey carried out by the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme) shows the shocking extent of the decline.
